Overview

Tsum valley is one of the world’s remotest Himalayan Valleys which lying in the northern part of Manaslu was a restricted region until 2008. The adventurous trip towards Tsum valley takes you into the amazing surroundings of the Sringi Himal, Ganesh Himal and Bouddha Himal ranges. This serene Himalayan valley is rich in ancient culture, art and religion. It is a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley which has a long history of Buddhism. Mostly local people of Tsum valley are from Tibetan origin with pristine culture. All the visitors will be surprised due to their unique culture; they have their own family life. All the brothers in the family are married to a single girl this practice known as ‘polyandry’. This all unique culture of Tsum valley makes our trek more surprising and pleasurable.

The trek to Tsum valley starts with the sightseeing in the UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu and by driving to Arughat. After 8 hours from Kathmandu we will reach Soti Khola safely. Now, we will begin our trek through the dense alpine forests, hilly settlements, glacial rivers, terraced farming and Budhi Gandaki valley.

Day 1:Arrival day in Kathmandu

Namaste & welcome!

You are warmly welcome to the beautiful land of Himalayas. While you are landed at the Tribhuvan international airport, Kathmandu Nepal, you will be greeted by a representative from Asia Outfitter Inc who will transfer you in your hotel. We will give you detailed information about trek and itinerary after you freshen up. You can stroll around the streets of ‘Thamel’ which is known by its narrow alleys crowded with various shops and vendors. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Asia Outfitter Inc where you will be served delicious Nepalese local food. Overnight stay at hotel in Kathmandu.

This morning after breakfast we will take your city tour to the world heritage sites, most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu. We will take you to visit ‘Pashupatinath’ one of the famous pilgrimages, the most important shrine of Shiva temples. We can get a chance to observe the cremating body on the bank of the Bagmati River. Another famous site ‘Swayambhunath’ the Monkey temple and Buddhists shrine (Bouddhanath) is one of the amazing and largest stupas in the world. We can explore the antique such as squares, courtyards, and temples of this vibrant city.

After visiting Bouddhanath we will drive towards the third biggest town in the valley named ‘Bhaktapur’ which is known as the city of Devotees. We can explore the surrounding area of Bhaktapur and stop for lunch in a local Nepalese restaurant. It’s time to drive back to Kathmandu and prepares for the next day with your travel consultants. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Early morning we’ll leave Kathmandu for Arughat drive by local bus or private jeep (depend upon your choice) through the wonderful countryside. It takes another 1-hour drive from Arughat to Sotikhola. Along the way, we enjoy the gorgeous scenic beauty of Shringri Himal. As part of the road especially after Arughat to Soti Khola can be pretty rugged and bumpy, but the beauty of nature such as Manaslu, Annapurna, Lantang, and Ganesh Himal will make up your discomforts. Our trail descends to a high cascading waterfall to Kyorpani. This is a small hamlet, where Magar and Gurung family are living. From here, the trek descends to Soti Khola. Overnight stay in Soti Khola.

We begin our trek through the attractive Sal forests and then climb onto the narrow hilltop above the huge and fast-flowing river Budhi Gandaki. The rocky path goes up and downs. Some rice terrace farms on the down path and we can observe Gurung settlements in the upper trek. The total walk for the day will approximately be 8 to 10 hours. Machha Khola is a village located above a stream. Night stay in Machha Khola.

The trek from Machha Khola to Doban is precipitous ups and downs that pass through small hamlets all the way to Tatopani. We can observe the large settlements of Gurung through the walk. Passing through Tatopani, we climb a well-designed companionway over a ridge, cross the BudhiGandaki and further ascend to Doban. Approx 7 hours we will reach Doban overnight at the hotel.

The trek climbs a rough stony route. We will cross the Yaru river and pass some ravine of BudhiGandaki River then reach the restricted area of Jagat. Other Gurung settlements we can see through our trek. After some distance of the walk, we arrive at Salleri(1,440m) from where we can see the close magnificent view of Mt. Sringi. Following the trail, we reach a Buddhist village name Sardibas (1,430m). Along the trek, we will cross a long suspension bridge and ascents to Philim (1,590m). Approximately, 6-7 hours of walk we will reach Philim. It is an amazing village full of natural beauty where we can see the agricultural fields of maize, millet, and potato especially. Now, we can take a rest or stroll around the village. Overnight stay at Philim.

Today, the trek starts in the morning through Philim and heads up over a ridge that leads towards Ganesh Himal Base camp. After observing the scenic beauty of Mountain vista then we follow the trail to Chumling for a night stay. There are several good campsites at Chumling so we camp for the night.

Today, we’ll head our trail to Chhokanparo. Upper Tsum valley (part of the Inner Himalaya) opens from Chhokanparo. We can get a chance to observe the small village which is located on the plain area and made up of two settlements Chhekam and Paro. Some families in that village practice polyandry. From the valley, the stunning view of the Ganesh Himal range to the south can be seen directly where it gives the magnificent glow of Himal chuli peaks and Baudha to the south-west.

From Chhkanparo we walk towards Nile/Chhule which is the last village heading north in the upper Tsum Valley. About 20minutes of a trek across from the Chhule, there we can see the Nile is on the western, sun-side of the Shair Khola.

Piren Phu Cave is another interesting part to see through the trek which is one of the most sacred caves in the Tsum valley. It is located at the foot of a rough high steep near Burji village. Milarepa is the place where Tibetan saint comes to meditate. Another best part of that place is to observe two separate gambas attached to the rocky cave. Well-painted Buddhist murals wonder artistically designed scripts carved on stone, prayer flags, significant Buddhist paper scripts make this cave one of the most wonderful sites to observe according to the socio-cultural perspectives in the valley. An amazing view can be had of the Shiar Khola, Rachen Gumba, and the mountain vista. Overnight stay at Nile/Chihuly.

With the beautiful morning, we will start our trek from the Nile to Mu Gompa. The trail gradually ascends to Mu Gompa (the largest monastery in the region). It is located at the highest and farthest point in the Tsum valley which was established in 1895 AD. It is situated at an altitude of 3510m. After exploring Mu Gomp we can also observe the monastery houses religious books, including Kangyur, a life-sized statue of Avalokiteshwara, and images of Guru Padmasambhava and Tara.

Finally, we reach the oldest monasteries (Dhephyudonma) in the Tsum valley after 2 hours of walk from the village Nile/Chihuly. It is located in the rugged mountains. The history of this monastery is related to the dawn of Buddhism in the valley which is run by Lama Serap of Nile Ladrang from the Kangin sect. Some campsites and drinking water facilities we can see there.

We will start our trek from Mu Gompa to Rachen Gumba, (established in 1905 AD) a nunnery. The nunnery is situated in the Shiar Khola Valley in the foothills of the mountains bordering Tibet and Nepal. It is one of the largest nunneries in Tsum valley. The nunnery houses one thousand clay, shaped statues of Avalokiteshwara, a luminously colored, engraved throne and pillar, and a large prayer wheel. We will have lunch then continues our walk to Chhokangparo for an overnight stay.

We begin our walk from Chhokangparo to Lokpa through a Ripchet. It is a small hamlet with about eight houses and adjoining cattle shed. After 6 hours of a wonderful trek, we reach Lokpa for a night's stay.

After breakfast, From Lokpa, we will continue our walk to Dobhan that passes through several beautiful villages with scenic views of wonderful landscapes with stunning high Himalayas. It takes approximately 7 hours to reach Dobhan.

Today, with the beautiful morning we begin our trek after having some breakfast for Lapubesi through a small route which we took when we ascent. The trail passes through the beautiful jungle, waterfalls, and some coffee land to reach Lapubesi. Finally, we reach Lapubesi after 7 hours of a trek for a night stay.

On the final day, we’ll start our trek through the narrow path of the BudhiGandaki valley. We can see the donkey trains on the path which makes our path narrower, clinging to the cliffside.

After a couple of hours, we will back to the road head to Soti Khola where we can get a bus for Arughat Bazzar and the bamboo garden on the way. We stay at a hotel in Arughat and take a rest after having some traditional Nepalese dinner.
